K I N D R E D is a collection of lovely things that go really well together, made by people who work with their hands, from their hearts.

We’re pleased to offer the work of a dozen makers from across the US and Canada. We’ll be telling you a bit more about each one over the next several weeks, but for now here’s our list. We’re certain you’ll find that at least a few, if not all, strike your fancy.

Satsuma Press is Lynn Russell’s small-scale letterpress studio. Lynn fancies good, simple design that is pleasing to the eye and mind; refreshing color and lush paper; plenty of open space and quiet, graceful beauty.

She believes in the following: fine craftsmanship, finding joy in the work she does, and that letterpress printing is a thing of beauty. In order to stay true to these beliefs, she makes sure to also make and keep time for cooking, eating, and appreciating good food; knitting and reading; and thinking of ways to bring KINDRED makers together.

Lynn likes a brand new notebook, a freshly made bed, clean wood floors, a perfect peach, the color ochre, making lists, Mexican coke in a bottle, dresses with pockets.

Lynn dislikes green peppers, scratchy wool, typos, the smell of marigolds, driving on the freeway, flannel sheets, price tags that don’t peel off easily.

20 Questions

1. Coffee or tea? Coffee, Chemex. For years, I was a tea-only drinker, but Chemex brought me back to coffee.

2. What’s the last great book you read, or just an all-time favorite? The Family Fang by Kevin Wilson.

3. Favorite season/time of year? Fall.

4. Sweet or savory? Savory, but sweet with salt is awfully good, too.

5. Can you drive stick shift? Yep!

6. Favorite type of pen and/or pencil? Pentel mechanical drafting pencil

7. Secret junk food vice? American cheese on hamburgers.

8. Early bird or night owl? Early bird, by necessity.

9. Are you a list-maker? On your computer, or with pen and paper? Always, everywhere, for everything.

10. Where were you born? Penang, Malaysia.

11. Would you rather cook, or do the dishes? Cook, but I don’t leave much clean up so if you eat with me, you’re in luck with dishes.

12. Do you dance in public or would you rather not? Not so much.

13. Are you spontaneous or do you like to plan ahead? A planner, mostly.

14. Do you buy books or use the public library? Both. I buy books, but only keep the ones I would recommend to others. Inexplicably, I fail to return library books in a timely manner.

15. Do you have a favorite place in San Francisco? I have a thing for Burma Superstar, salted caramel ice cream from bi-rite, canele de bordeaux from Boulette’s Larder. (I like to find good things to eat wherever I go.) Although I don’t just eat while in San Francisco. My friend, Heidi, took me to March last time I was there. It’s a really lovely shop and I wanted everything there.

16. Do you consider yourself an optimist? Yes.

17. Cats or dogs? Neither or both? Kittens.

18. Favorite color? Ochre.

19. Are you able to go to the grocery store and buy only what’s on your list? Never. I often make a list and then find that I don’t have it once I’m actually at the grocery store which accounts for some of the random things that end up in the cart.

20. Are you good at math? Yes.

SCARFSHOP scarves are dyed by hand in small batches by Martha McQuade. Trained as an architect, Martha spends most of her time making things, teaching design, and recording her process.

Martha’s scarves are the most beautiful, lush colors and it’s impossible to have just one. They are made from light as air cotton, with an open, textural weave. (I absolutely love this month’s color – mulberry – and just received mine today. I know I’ll wear it often.)

Martha is going to send a nice collection of colors in assorted sizes for KINDRED. We’re sure these are going to fly out the door, so make sure you come by early!!

Martha likes candy (any kind except circus peanuts), BIG landscapes (like West Texas), seeing creative people’s workspaces and sketchbooks, and wool fiber.

She dislikes bad lighting, dull people, and circus peanuts (see above).

OLO is a tiny fragrance line based in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 2009 by self-taught perfumer Heather Sielaff, each fragrance continues to be hand blended and bottled to order. OLO Fragrance blends contain fractionated coconut oil, essential oils, key accords and absolutes. We are so delighted to have Heather sending us a small collection of her lovely fragrances to us at KINDRED.

Heather likes mist floating through the trees, the sound of waves, the smell of wet earth, any animal with paws, chocolate, bullshitting with her grandfather.

Heather dislikes flip flops, Axe body spray, lazy folks, sushi (sorry, it’s a texture thing), clowns.

1. Coffee or tea? Tea. All day, every day.

2. Favorite season/time of year? Fall

3. Sweet or savory?  Savory

4. Can you drive stick shift?  Maybe.  My first car was a stick shift but it’s been a long time.

5. Ocean or lake? Ocean.  A really big lake will do.

6.Secret junk food vice? There are no secrets, Reese’s peanut butter cups!  None of that natural nonsense.

7.Early bird or night owl? Early riser but only out of necessity.

8. A favorite meal?  Any meal involving bread or potato is my favorite.

9. Are you a list-maker? On your computer, or with pen and paper?  I’m big on list making.  Always with pen and paper.

10. Favorite time of day?  Early morning, drinking tea and preparing for the day.

11. Where were you born? Charlotte, North Carolina

12. Would you rather cook, or do the dishes?  Dishes.  I can bake but I am not a good cook.

13. Are you on time or do you run late?  On time unless my husband is involved.

14. Do you buy books or use the public library?  I buy books, read them in a few days then wish I had used the library.

15. Do you have a favorite place in San Francisco?  San Francisco is my favorite city so I’m happy to be anywhere in it.

Angie Davis is the maker behind byrd & belle. Based in Minneapolis, Angie started byrd & belle in 2008 and, since then has constructed thousands of sleeves and cases and shipped them to over 35 countries around the world. (Both Teresa and Lynn are owners of byrd & belle cases – and love them. )

Angie has a degree in architecture and practiced for nearly 10 years before starting her studio. She draws heavily on her experience in architecture and the design sensibility she formed during those years carries over into the clean, minimal aesthetic of her work.
