K I N D R E D is a small but mighty pop up shop happening in San Francisco on December 15th and 16th. It’s a little project by Lynn Russell of Satsuma Press and Teresa Robinson of Stone & Honey.

K I N D R E D is a collection of lovely things that go really well together, made by people who work with their hands, from their hearts.

We’re pleased to offer the work of a dozen makers from across the US and Canada. We’ll be telling you a bit more about each one over the next several weeks, but for now here’s our list. We’re certain you’ll find that at least a few, if not all, strike your fancy.

SATSUMA PRESS // STONE & HONEY // FORAGE HABERDASHERY // BOOKHOU // MODASPIA // FALCONWRIGHT // SHANNA MURRAY // LEAH DUNCAN // CANOE // LUMINOLOGY // MOOP // BYRD & BELLE // OLO FRAGRANCE // SCARF SHOP

A big thanks goes out to Rena Tom for having MAKESHIFT available to us, and for her encouragement. We’ll also be in good company with MUHS HOME, Makeshift Society’s month-long pop-up.

And also much gratitude to Shanna Murray for the beautiful K I N D R E D logo. We are so lucky to have her artwork represent us.

come visit KINDRED on
december 15th from 11-7 & december 16th from 11-5
at makeshift society
235 gough street
san francisco

A note about the pop up … although we’d love it even more if each of the makers in our stellar line up could be there in person, this time it will just be the two of us: Lynn (satsuma press) + Teresa (stone & honey). We know that it’s really great to meet makers in person, but the travel expenses for markets can also be prohibitive for many of us, so we’ll be there to set up everything just so and to take care of sales and questions. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

+++

GIVEAWAY!! Check out the collection of good things we are giving away over at SF Girl by Bay!

We will also have an in-person giveaway for those of you who come visit our pop up shop!

Satsuma Press is Lynn Russell’s small-scale letterpress studio. Lynn fancies good, simple design that is pleasing to the eye and mind; refreshing color and lush paper; plenty of open space and quiet, graceful beauty.

She believes in the following: fine craftsmanship, finding joy in the work she does, and that letterpress printing is a thing of beauty. In order to stay true to these beliefs, she makes sure to also make and keep time for cooking, eating, and appreciating good food; knitting and reading; and thinking of ways to bring KINDRED makers together.

Lynn likes a brand new notebook, a freshly made bed, clean wood floors, a perfect peach, the color ochre, making lists, Mexican coke in a bottle, dresses with pockets.

Lynn dislikes green peppers, scratchy wool, typos, the smell of marigolds, driving on the freeway, flannel sheets, price tags that don’t peel off easily.

20 Questions

1. Coffee or tea? Coffee, Chemex. For years, I was a tea-only drinker, but Chemex brought me back to coffee.

2. What’s the last great book you read, or just an all-time favorite? The Family Fang by Kevin Wilson.

3. Favorite season/time of year? Fall.

4. Sweet or savory? Savory, but sweet with salt is awfully good, too.

5. Can you drive stick shift? Yep!

6. Favorite type of pen and/or pencil? Pentel mechanical drafting pencil

7. Secret junk food vice? American cheese on hamburgers.

8. Early bird or night owl? Early bird, by necessity.

9. Are you a list-maker? On your computer, or with pen and paper? Always, everywhere, for everything.

10. Where were you born? Penang, Malaysia.

11. Would you rather cook, or do the dishes? Cook, but I don’t leave much clean up so if you eat with me, you’re in luck with dishes.

12. Do you dance in public or would you rather not? Not so much.

13. Are you spontaneous or do you like to plan ahead? A planner, mostly.

14. Do you buy books or use the public library? Both. I buy books, but only keep the ones I would recommend to others. Inexplicably, I fail to return library books in a timely manner.

15. Do you have a favorite place in San Francisco? I have a thing for Burma Superstar, salted caramel ice cream from bi-rite, canele de bordeaux from Boulette’s Larder. (I like to find good things to eat wherever I go.) Although I don’t just eat while in San Francisco. My friend, Heidi, took me to March last time I was there. It’s a really lovely shop and I wanted everything there.

16. Do you consider yourself an optimist? Yes.

17. Cats or dogs? Neither or both? Kittens.

18. Favorite color? Ochre.

19. Are you able to go to the grocery store and buy only what’s on your list? Never. I often make a list and then find that I don’t have it once I’m actually at the grocery store which accounts for some of the random things that end up in the cart.

20. Are you good at math? Yes.

OLO is a tiny fragrance line based in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 2009 by self-taught perfumer Heather Sielaff, each fragrance continues to be hand blended and bottled to order. OLO Fragrance blends contain fractionated coconut oil, essential oils, key accords and absolutes.
Angie Davis is the maker behind byrd & belle. Based in Minneapolis, Angie started byrd & belle in 2008 and, since then has constructed thousands of sleeves and cases and shipped them to over 35 countries around the world. (Both Teresa and Lynn are owners of byrd & belle cases – and love them. )

Angie has a degree in architecture and practiced for nearly 10 years before starting her studio. She draws heavily on her experience in architecture and the design sensibility she formed during those years carries over into the clean, minimal aesthetic of her work.

P.S. Angie is going to be sending some new cases for the iPad mini, too!!

Angie likes iced coffee, dresses/skirt with pockets, maps, mowing the lawn, knee socks, people who make things, etymology, airports, and pinstripes.

Angie dislikes running errands, wall-to-wall carpet, multitasking, fluorescent lighting, ambient noise, and the color orange.

Twenty Questions with Angie

1. Coffee or tea? Coffee in the morning. Tea at night.

2. What’s the last great book you read, or just an all-time favorite? I just finished Driftless by David Rhoades. It takes place (and was written) near where I grew up in northeast Iowa. It is a beautiful piece of contemporary midwestern fiction.

3. Favorite season/time of year? June in Minnesota is absolutely perfect and almost makes it worth living through a Minnesota winter. Almost.

4. Album you have on repeat right now? Polica, Give You The Ghost

5. Can you drive stick shift? Yes

6. Favorite type of pen and/or pencil? Bruynzeel Design Pencil 8615 F. Sharp, but not too

sharp.

7. Tell us an odd/random fact about yourself: I have what neuroscientists refer to as ‘left-right-confusion’. Really. It’s a thing.

8. Ocean or lake? I find historical illustrations and imagery of ocean creatures and vessels terribly romantic but the idea of being in open water myself is terrifying. Go figure.

9.Early bird or night owl? Night owl

10. Are you a list-maker? On your computer, or with pen and paper? I generally keep lists in my head. Prioritizing and rearranging on the fly and forgetting the non-important stuff until it is important. It’s a bit like mental whack-a-mole.

11. Favorite time of day? Early, early mornings which is unfortunate given my night owl schedule.

12. Some people do, some people don’t: do you wear hats? When it’s cold, yes. I’m a fan of the plain black stocking cap pulled down low.

13. Would you rather cook, or do the dishes? I’m lucky that my beloved does most of the cooking and I’m happy to do the dishes.

14. Are you on time or do you run late? Exactly on time.

15. Are you spontaneous or do you like to plan ahead? Plan ahead.

16. Do you buy books or use the public library? Both. My book consumption is a bit out of control this year. I get through a book every few days plus I listen to audiobooks in the studio while I work. I buy what I’m too impatient to wait for from the library and if I get something from the library that I love, I go back and buy it to keep it close.

17. Do you consider yourself an optimist? I generally think things will turn out well and when they don’t, there is still something to be gained.

18. Cats or dogs? Neither or both? We have both in our house.

19. Favorite color? Gray, of course.

20. Are you good at card and board games? Yes! Let’s play!

I have two triangle print bags from bookhou that I use all the time. The larger one is big enough for a morning at the farmers’ market or a day trip. And the smaller tote is perfect for everyday use – room enough for wallet, sunglasses, a little notebook and pencil, an extra roll up bag for groceries or what-have-you, a paperback book or iPad.

Troubled by the endless sea of mindless pick-me-ups and disposable products in today’s market, Angela Sands sought out to introduce a product that would stand the test of time – both in quality and timeless beauty. Thus, in February of 2010, Luminology was born.

Marrying a clean, modern aesthetic with the time-honored tradition of pottery-making, Angela designes candles inspired by a love for the soft crackle of oversized cement fire pits. Hand-crafted by local artisans daily, each porcelain vessel represents the beauty in imperfection; the elegance in the everyday. We think her ideology, aesthetic, and just plain beautiful product make Luminology the perfect addition to KINDRED.

Made with pure ingredients and minimal packaging, Luminology is an expression of restraint and simplicity. Angela describes herself as much the same, seeking to live a life with mindful intention and effortless beauty. She currently live in Davenport, Iowa, with her husband and two perfectly imperfect children.

Angela likes scuba diving, piano concertos, dreaming while awake, flying while asleep, linen, James Bond, mountains, horses, a good cup of chai, freedom

Angela dislikes knick-knacks, snakes, cliques, acrylic, conflict, hot dogs, smelly taxi cabs, spam
